A Sagatless Ashley Olsen and Paul Rudd all stopped to sign autographs as they left The Late Show with David Letterman last night. Rudd was promoting his new comedy Role Models while Olsen was promoting the extended DVD Criterion Collection version of New York Minute which features 45 minutes of exclusive Eugene Levy bonus footage. I’ve met presidents, movie stars, and countless others whom I have long admired, but in my 10-year career in journalism, it’s still my favorite story to tell. My guess is it will always be. Back in 2000, while working for a local newspaper, I was assigned a special task of writing for the program of the first ever Stamford, CT-based Director’s View Film Festival. The newspaper was somehow affliated with the festival, I don’t recall why or how but it doesn’t matter. I specifically was assigned to write the biographies of legendary filmmakers Robert Benton and Joseph L. Mankiewicz. For the piece, I interviewed Benton himself, Mankiewicz’s filmmaker son, and was given several phone numbers of actors who had appeared in their films. Only one actor replied, and it was the greatest one of all time: Paul Newman. The story begins there.
