Most are amused and weigh in, while others instantly shout out a name with commanding force and detail to back it up. Some, however, can’t find the words or dismiss it altogether. Outspoken Beastie Boy Adam Yauch was speechless during a NYC press day when I posed the question to him. Similarly, Soulja Boy asked me to repeat the question, giggled and tossed it over to his entourage. His publicist chimed in with a “please move on” before the answer came. Thankfully those two examples are in the minority. I’m talking of course about the answer to that should-be-age-old question of “who has the best mustache ever?” It’s a question I’ve posed to all walks of pop life ever since I launched this pop culture A.D.D. blog, thecheappop.com, four years ago this month. If a man has a mustache, it’s hands-down his most distinguishable facial feature. Whether it’s a handlebar, pencil-thin, fu Manchu, toothbrush, or horseshoe—it’s how’s he’s identified and described. This book recognizes this fact and celebrates the most famous mustaches—and the faces behind them. From politicians and ball players to pop stars and actors, this book covers them all with wit and humor.
Authors Jon Chattman and Rich Tarantino have provided profiles and ‘stache-analysis for the forty-nine men and one woman who made the cut. (One can’t count out Frida Kahlo’s artistic bigote!) It also includes sidebar lists that rank the top ‘staches Continue reading
News that ABC has canceled the often entertaining (but frustrating) “Life on Mars” is a bit bittersweet. Jason O’Mara and Gretchen Mol really worked wonders with their roles and despite the storylines sometimes coming up lame – recent episodes have added a sort of “Lost-esque” feel to it. The show will be missed, but even more so, Michael Imperioli’s groovy mustache will be… We can only hope he ends up on another series with that stache intact. Hey, there’s no ‘staches on “Ugly Betty,” “Lost” or “Two-and-a-Half Men” yet are there?
Back when Rich and I were doing the publicity tour for “The Book of ‘Bert,’” our well-documented mustache humor book published by a man who ran off with all the royalties and didn’t bother to write, call, or even email – anyway, we ran into Richard Jenkins outside Madison Square Garden. It was a random meeting – he had been in town promoting “The Visitor,” and was just sort of chilling outside. I went up to him (having recognized him instantly thanks to “Six Feet Under” and “Flirting with Disaster”) and handed him a copy of the book for free. He was very modest and super nice and told me not to give the book away. In other words, how would we make our money if we handed him a comp copy? Point taken, and valid, but I’m glad he’s got the book and more importantly, so pleased he was recognized for his understated yet powerful performance in “The Visitor.”
Good guy. Great performance. Lousy publisher.

Doug Henning gave us the gift of magic. His mustache gave us the gift of, well, more magic. To celebrate the accomplishments of both… thecheappop.com is proud to present National Doug Henning Week on the site. Marvel at the man, the mustache, and the magic.
